Six games, re-queried on 2026-09-13 from the per-game breakdowns already published on this site. Two of the six now share a leading complaint — X4: Foundations and Songs of Syx both lead on the interface — where the other four each name something different. Escape from Tarkov’s language split is the widest measured here, 39 points between English (62.4%) and Simplified Chinese (23.3%) on the full all-time count. X4’s playtime split is the widest of the three: 22.9% positive among reviewers with under two hours logged, 90.5% among those past 200.
The interface just stopped being a one-game problem
Re-running each game’s own topic classifier on this week’s negative reviews turns up five distinct leading complaints across six games, not six. X4: Foundations and Songs of Syx both lead on the interface — 37% of X4’s negative reviews mention the UI, menus, tutorial or controls, and 23% of Songs of Syx’s do, both the top topic in their respective samples by a wide margin over the next closest.
The other four spread out: Mistfall Hunter’s negatives lead on performance at 43% (dated to the 2026-08-27 sample that page’s topic work is still built on), Tarkov’s on performance at 22% (re-queried today, with cheating a close second at 14%), Project Zomboid’s on general bugginess at 18% (mods follow at 16%, a reshuffle from an August pull where mods led at 26%), and Corsair Cove’s on content depth at 15% — down from 27% in the game’s first four weeks, the clearest sign here of a complaint fading as a launch window closes.
No topic tops the list for more than two games, and the two that share one are adjacent games with famously dense control schemes. That is closer to a coincidence of genre than a site-wide pattern — this dataset has six games, not a representative sample of Steam.
The language split is not the same size in every game
Tarkov’s gap is the widest and the best-supported: 62.4% positive among 14,713 English reviews, 23.3% among 15,720 Simplified Chinese reviews, both all-time totals re-queried today — 39 points on 30,000-plus combined reviews, not a small spot check. A 139-review sample of the Chinese-language negatives found 27% naming servers, optimisation or lag, against 22% in the English corpus, where cheating is the second-place topic instead. Russian, despite Tarkov’s Russian developer, sits with the high-scoring block at 59.5% — the gap tracks infrastructure a language community happens to connect through, not distance from the studio.
Mistfall Hunter’s all-time split runs almost as wide, 35 points between Brazilian Portuguese (69.7%) and Traditional Chinese (34.4%). X4, Corsair Cove, Project Zomboid and Songs of Syx are smaller — 19, 13, 11 and 7 points, all four all-time totals with every language above the 100-review floor used throughout this section. That floor matters: Corsair Cove’s Traditional Chinese, at 55 all-time reviews, reads 76.4%, a point below the Simplified Chinese figure used above — folding it in would widen Corsair Cove’s gap to 14 points on a sample this comparison deliberately excludes.
Project Zomboid also has a second, larger language gap that does not belong in the same ranking as the five above. This week’s recent-review language table — a few hundred reviews from the last several days, not the game’s full history — reads French at 97.4% (n=39) against Simplified Chinese at 69.5% (n=95), a 28-point split. That number moves with whichever reviews Steam returned this week; the 11-point all-time figure above, built on a population in the tens of thousands per language, is the stabler read, and the two should not be averaged together.
What none of the six re-queried per-game language breakdowns can establish is why a given language sits low: a Simplified Chinese review can be written from anywhere, and Steam’s payload does not record a reviewer’s actual region.
The first two hours are not what the store page shows
Every game but one reads much worse among reviewers with under two hours logged than among reviewers with more. X4 climbs 68 points, from 22.9% under two hours to 90.5% in the 200–1,000 hour band re-queried this week. Tarkov climbs 57, Project Zomboid 54, Corsair Cove 47, Songs of Syx 36 — each comparing a small under-2-hour band (25 to 110 reviews) against a same-week band of at least 200.
Mistfall Hunter breaks the pattern outright. Applying the identical rule — under-2-hour rate against the best band with at least 200 reviews — to this week’s fresh five-band re-pull (31 August–13 September, re-queried 2026-09-13) gives 29.6% under two hours (n=27) against 33.3% in the 30–100 hour band (n=258), a 4-point gap. The 2–10 hour band actually scores higher, 52.7% (n=110), but falls under the 200-review floor used everywhere else in this section, so it is left out rather than treated as an exception. Either way, the game’s largest band, 100 hours and over (n=504), reads lowest of all at 25.8%. For the other five games, patience is rewarded by the data. For Mistfall Hunter, there is no band — early, qualifying, or largest — where most players are happy.
None of this establishes that a rough interface specifically, rather than difficulty or unfamiliarity in general, is what drives the early band’s low score — the per-game topic splits above describe negative reviews across all playtimes pooled, not the under-two-hour band specifically, and no re-query this week isolated that band’s complaints by topic.
The three numbers side by side
| Game | Leading complaint (share of negatives) | Widest language gap (all-time, n≥100) | Under-2h to best band (n≥200) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tarkov | performance, 22% | 39 pts (English 62% / Chinese 23%) | +57 pts (19% to 76%) |
| X4: Foundations | UI/UX, 37% | 19 pts (Br. Port. 90% / Japanese 71%) | +68 pts (23% to 91%) |
| Songs of Syx | UI/UX, 23% | 7 pts (Br. Port. 99% / Chinese 92%) | +36 pts (54% to 90%) |
| Project Zomboid | bugs, 18% | 11 pts (Br. Port. 97% / Chinese 86%; this week’s recent read is a separate 28-pt gap) | +54 pts (40% to 94%) |
| Corsair Cove | content depth, 15% | 13 pts (French 90% / Chinese 77%) | +47 pts (46% to 93%) |
| Mistfall Hunter | performance, 43% (2026-08-27 sample) | 35 pts (Br. Port. 70% / Trad. Chinese 34%) | +4 pts (29.6% to 33.3%, then falls to 25.8% past 100h) |
No game tops all three columns, and no game is lowest on all three either — the axis that makes a game look worst depends on which axis you pick.
Method, and what three re-queried datasets can’t settle together
Every number above is pulled from this week’s per-game re-queries (2026-09-13), except the Mistfall
Hunter topic split, which is still the 2026-08-27 sample that page’s complaint-topic section is
built on — noted inline above wherever it appears. Topic shares come from keyword matching, not
human coding, and one review can match more than one topic; each per-game page linked below states
its own keyword set. Language and playtime figures are read straight from each game’s query_summary
or playtime-bucket totals, not recomputed here.
Two floors apply throughout, stated as numbers so the rankings above can be checked or overturned by re-running the same query with a different cutoff: a language needs at least 100 all-time reviews to appear in the language-gap section (Corsair Cove’s 55-review Traditional Chinese and Songs of Syx’s 66-review Korean are excluded by this rule, not by hand-picking), and a playtime band needs at least 200 reviews to count as a game’s “best” or “qualifying” band in the playtime section (Mistfall Hunter’s higher-scoring 110-review 2–10 hour band is excluded by the same rule).
- Whether these six games represent Steam generally. They don’t; the site covers six specific titles, and every ratio and gap above is a property of this set, not a sampling frame.
- Whether topic keyword sets are equivalent across games. Each page validates its own set against its own review text; a topic absent from one game’s list may simply not have been checked for.
- Cross-game causation for the early-hours gap. The playtime figures and the topic figures come from separate cuts of the same review pools; this page does not link a specific complaint to a specific playtime band inside any one game.
- Whether recent-review snapshots (Project Zomboid’s language table, several games’ playtime
bands) will look the same next week. A
filter=recentpull moves with the last few hundred reviews; the all-time totals used for Tarkov and Mistfall Hunter’s language gaps do not.
