Corsair Cove crew upkeep: what every rank eats

Corsair Cove Guide 9 min read

Short answer: every rank in Corsair Cove has a permanent per-minute upkeep bill, and unlocking a rank is worthless until the factory that makes its food is already running. Two ranks — Buccaneers and Navigators — partly eat resources that have no production building at all.

The wiki publishes the upkeep list and the production list on separate pages, so nobody ever sees them side by side. Joined below, they answer the actual question: what do I have to build before I hire these people?

Three specific ranks and buildings people search for individually, answered directly: Roast Bird is a Masterhand food good, not a Greenhand one — 30/min from a Rotisserie on 2 Birds + 4 Herbs, and per the wiki’s Purpose note it’s meant to feed a Galley “in medium quantities” for Masterhands specifically, distinct from the Stew that Greenhands and Swabbies eat instead. Picaroons are a Crew rank that eats 1 Rum per minute and crew Tier 2-3 Destroyers and Reavers, so they need a Cooper and Sugar Cane Farm feeding a Distillery before they’re worth unlocking. Slop Shop is the Equipment building that makes the Slops half of a Crow’s Eyes’ upkeep — 15 Slops/min from 12 Leather + 2 Fabric, staffed by 6 Builders, 2 Fetchers and 4 Greenhands per the building’s own wiki page.

The upkeep matrix

Upkeep is per worker per minute. The “supplied by” column names the production building the wiki lists for that good; where more than one building makes it, the cheapest to reach is given first.

The pattern the table exposes

Upkeep quantity falls as rank rises — Swabbies cost 1 unit per good per minute, Corsairs only 0.1 — but the number of chains you must keep alive rises steeply. A Corsair costs a tenth as much of each good, and requires three independent factory chains, one of which (Pistols) needs a Shot Tower fed by Lead and Copper. Cheap per head is not cheap per empire.

The practical reading: a rank is affordable when its whole supply tree is already standing for some other reason. Bombardiers are painless if you already run a Tanner for Boots. They are a project if you do not.

Upkeep quantity falls as rank rises Corsair Cove — first-listed upkeep good per rank, from the upkeep matrix above Drifters 1 unit/min Swabbies 1 unit/min Bombardiers 1 unit/min Buccaneers 0.5 unit/min Marauders 0.2 unit/min Renegades 0.2 unit/min Corsairs 0.1 unit/min Per-good quantity only — chain count (how many factories each rank needs) rises even as this falls.

Tobacco and Wine: the two you cannot manufacture

Corsair Cove’s resource list contains six items in a Raid Resource category — Lens, Grain, Tobacco, Silver, Whale Blubber and Wine — and none of the six has a production building, an ingredient list, or a per-minute output. Two of those six are crew upkeep goods:

  • Buccaneers need 0.5 Tobacco per minute
  • Navigators need 0.5 Wine per minute

There is no factory entry on the wiki for either. So from the moment you crew a Tier 4 Prowler or Destroyer with Buccaneers, part of your standing upkeep is a resource your island cannot make. The wiki does not state the acquisition rate from raiding, so the honest version is: this is a structural dependency on raiding, of unquantified size. Do not let anyone sell you a Tobacco production number — there isn’t one published.

Grain and Lens matter for the same reason one step removed: the Tack Oven’s Hardtack needs 12 Grain, and the Spyglass Maker needs 8 Lens. Both have a producible alternative (the Provisioner makes Hardtack from Cassava Bread and Herbs; the Tinkerer makes Spyglass from Tools and Lime), so those two chains are escapable. Tobacco and Wine are not.

What a full crew actually burns

The wiki’s Ships page lists two different crew figures per hull: a base “Crew” stat used for the ship’s unmodified combat numbers, and a separate “Max of crew types” breakdown for a fully advanced crew — a larger total, split across the specialist ranks above. Loki, for example, has a base Crew stat of 300 but a max advanced crew of 130 Swabbies + 135 Renegades + 165 Corsairs, 430 bodies. Multiplying that breakdown by the upkeep matrix turns “high tier” into an actual number:

  • Landlubber (starter, max crew 15 Swabbies): 15 Stew/min + 15 Booze/min, nothing else.
  • Moonlight (Tier 2 Prowler, max crew 8 Swabbies + 15 Scallywags): 8 Stew + 8 Booze from the Campfire and Moonshine Still, plus 15 Cassava Bread/min — the Cassava Oven chain has to outrun the Campfire almost two to one.
  • Vulture (Tier 4 Prowler+, max crew 30 Swabbies + 35 Crow’s Eyes + 35 Buccaneers): 30 Stew + 30 Booze, 35 Turtle Soup + 35 Slops, and 17.5 Tobacco + 17.5 Eyepatch per minute. Half of that Tobacco figure draws on a good with no production building at all.
  • Loki (Tier 6 Reaver, max crew 130 Swabbies + 135 Renegades + 165 Corsairs): 130 Stew + 130 Booze, 27 Prosthesis + 27 Hardtack, and 16.5 each of Fancy Clothing, Pistols and Jewellery per minute — eight separate production buildings have to stay running at once just to hold that crew in place, before any of it fights.

How this connects to ships

Which ranks you need is decided entirely by which hull you build — Picaroons crew Tier 2-3 Destroyers and Reavers, Scallywags crew Tier 2-3 Prowlers and Hunters, and so on. The building cost matrix has the full build prices of every feeder factory named above. For the wider dependency picture, see the production chain matrix.
