Songs of Syx: why your days of food never go up

Two threads get posted over and over on r/songsofsyx and they are the same thread: “Why are my food days not going up?” and “Any idea why I have 0 days of food stored?” The answers under them are always specific to somebody else’s city, which is exactly why the question keeps coming back. Nobody can answer it for you without your numbers, so here is the arithmetic with a place to put them.

These are outputs of this site's own balance arithmetic run against illustrative inputs we chose, not values extracted from the game files — consumption, yield, fertility and harvest count are all things you read off your own farm and food panels. Days of food is a ratio, and the denominator moves

The number the game shows you is not a quantity. It is your stored food divided by what your population eats per day. Both halves move, and they usually move in the same direction, which is what makes the display so confusing:

  • You build more farms, storage rises, and the figure goes up. Good.
  • Population rises to fill the new jobs, the denominator rises with it, and the figure comes straight back down. Nothing broke.

A city that grows exactly as fast as its harvests will sit at a flat days-of-food figure forever while both the numerator and the denominator double. A city that grows slightly faster than its harvests shows a slowly falling number with full barns, and by the time the barns are visibly emptying the correction needed is much larger than it would have been.

So the useful question is never “how much food do I have”. It is is today’s production above today’s consumption, and if not, by how many tiles.

The chain you are actually balancing

Reading the diagram right to left is the whole trick. If you are looking at days-of-food to diagnose a food problem, you are reading the last box in the chain — three steps away from the thing you can change.

You are 222 short per day. Fertility is at 70% — moving the same 2000 tiles onto better ground is worth roughly 857 extra tiles of equivalent output.

Consumption per head, yield per tile, fertility and days per year are inputs, not claims — read them off your own save's food and farm panels. The arithmetic is ours; the constants are yours, which is why this stays correct across versions.

Every constant in there is an input rather than something we assert, and that is deliberate. Songs of Syx moves its numbers between versions and the public wiki has been sitting untouched since long before the current build, so any guide that hardcodes a yield figure is a guide with an expiry date it does not print. Pause your game, read the four figures off your own food and farm panels, and the output is correct for whatever version you are on.

The two rows worth staring at are tiles to break even and population this supply supports. The first tells you the size of the correction. The second tells you when you will be back here.

Where the balance usually breaks

Once you have the numbers, the failure is almost always one of four, and they call for different responses:

  • Placed but not worked. Fields you laid down are counted as farm by your eye and produce nothing without staff. The calculator asks for cultivated tiles for this reason.
  • Bad ground. Fertility multiplies straight through. Two hundred tiles at forty percent do the work of eighty; the labour bill is for two hundred. This is the one that looks like a labour shortage when it is a map-reading problem.
  • Seasonal, not daily. Farms harvest once per year rather than trickling output out daily, and the calculator spreads that lump across the year for you. If your storage cannot hold a full harvest, the surplus you computed never reaches the months that need it, and you will run a deficit on paper you do not have in principle.
  • Variety, not volume. A population can be swimming in grain and still short a food category it wants. That shortage never shows up as a negative balance, which is precisely why it goes undiagnosed. The last output row exists to separate that case from the others.

That fourth one is where the food problem stops being a food problem and turns into an unhappiness problem — food access gives fulfilment on its own, and species get extra fulfilment and a health bonus for eating foods they prefer — and it is the reason the two most-asked question clusters in this community are really one question with two symptoms. If happiness is the thing actually falling, the need-floor calculator will tell you whether food variety is the binding category or something else entirely.

The correction is smaller if you do it early

There is a compounding effect that makes waiting expensive. Farm output does not arrive when you place the field: the tiles have to be cultivated, staffed, and then harvested at the next harvest. A deficit you catch while storage is still deep gets absorbed by that lead time. A deficit you catch when the figure hits zero has to be fixed by imports or by shrinking, because no field you place today produces anything before people start starving.

The practical rule that falls out of the model: keep the calculator’s twenty percent buffer row as your target rather than break-even. Break-even means every fluctuation is a crisis.

Which version this is written against

V0.71. That is the branch the community was visibly playing through July and August 2026 — a 27 July 2026 thread on r/songsofsyx titles itself “How large do people make their workshops? (V 0.71)”, and the food threads quoted at the top sit in the same window. We are naming it because Songs of Syx moves its numbers between versions and most published Songs of Syx guidance does not say what it was written for.

What that version stamp does not do here is expire the calculator. Nothing above hardcodes a V0.71 value: every constant is a field you fill from your own save. If a later version halves farm output, you type the new figure and the answer is right again. The stamp tells you when the prose was checked, not when the arithmetic stops working.
