Fracture questions arrive in a specific shape: someone has a broken leg, they have the Slow Healer trait, and they want a number. The number is the wrong thing to want, and not because numbers are unknowable — because on a fracture the trait is not the dominant term. What you do with the limb every day is.

Unsplinted is the worst row in this model by a wide margin, and it is also the row where a second injury is most likely, because you keep moving at reduced speed through the same danger.

The model, in full

There is no honest way to publish a recovery estimator without publishing what is inside it, so here it is. These are this site’s parameters, chosen so that the relative ordering matches what the injury threads describe. They are not extracted game values, and where a number below conflicts with something you measure in your own save, your measurement wins.

Read the table as a claim about ratios, not about days. The claim is that an unsplinted fracture that you keep fighting on is roughly three times the cost of a splinted one you rest, and that no trait in the game moves you nearly that far.

What follows from that

  • Splint in the field, not at base. An improvised splint applied where you fell beats a proper one applied after a two-day limp home. The improvised-versus-proper gap in the model is small; the splinted-versus-unsplinted gap is not.
  • Slow Healer is a real cost and a bad excuse. If you are running Slow Healer and still looting on a fractured leg, the trait is the smaller half of your problem.
  • Bed rest is worth less than people hope. Resting is better than walking, but the model’s bed-rest row is only modestly below light base work. The saving comes from not walking and not fighting, rather than from lying down specifically.

Build 41 versus Build 42

The mechanics of fractures — splint, rest, time — are recognisably the same across both builds, and the ordering above holds on either. What differs is everything around the injury: Build 42’s crafting, animal and food systems change what two idle weeks at base actually cost you, and change how easy it is to improvise a splint from what is nearby.

So treat the estimate as build-neutral and the plan as build-specific. A fortnight of enforced base time is a much better deal on Build 42, where there is genuinely a fortnight of work to do sitting down.

The failure that is not the fracture

Almost nobody dies of a broken leg. They die of the trip they took on it — for water, for food, for a car — on day nine, because they set up for a recovery they thought would take five days. Whatever number the estimator gives you, provision for the top of the range.
